A terrible accident happened late Monday evening, January 23rd. A fire broke out in a residential facility in Kamen in the Ruhr area.

The cause of the fire is still unclear, as the Unna district police told DER WESTEN on Tuesday morning. The only thing known at the moment is the sad truth that two people died that night. In addition, there were several injuries after the fire in the Ruhr area.

It was a tragic Monday evening for emergency responders and residents of the residential facility for disabled adults. According to initial information, a fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. in the Friedrich-Proebsting-Haus on Pröbstingholz Street. A police spokeswoman for DER WESTEN has not yet been able to confirm the exact location.

The fire alarm system probably called the fire brigade into action. When the forces arrived, the fire had already spread to part of the building wing. They immediately began rescuing people and evacuating the residents.

They were able to save one person with minor injuries, one came to the hospital with serious injuries and is currently in acute danger of death. For two residents, any help came too late. They died on the spot that evening.

Still many open questions

After the accident, emergency chaplains were on site to look after the evacuated residents. The criminal police of the Unna district police have now taken over the case and are investigating the cause of the fire.
