President of Peru asks "a truce" in protests over his resignation

Peru.- The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, requested this Tuesday “a national truce” and “establish dialogue tables” to appease the protests demanding his resignation that claimed 46 deaths in five weeks.

I call my beloved homeland to a national truce to be able to establish dialogue tables, to be able to set the agenda for each region and develop our peoples,” he said, describing the protesters who relaunched the protests in the southern Andes as “violent radicals and with their own agenda.”

I will not get tired of calling them to dialogue, peace and unity“, Boluarte said in a conference with the foreign press at the Government Palace in Lima.

The Peruvian president’s call for dialogue and truce comes when another day of protests was called in Lima, even more challenging than that of recent days with the announced arrival of new contingents in the capital.

The protests broke out after the removal and arrest of the leftist president Pedro Castillo, on December 7, when the ruler tried to dissolve Parliament – controlled by the right – when he was about to remove him from power for alleged corruption.

However, after resuming on January 4the main claims focused on social rights, inequality and racial discrimination in forgotten historical areas of Peru with an indigenous majority.

Boluarte repeatedly reiterated his “sorry for the deceased” in these protests, at least 46 directly related to the demonstrations, which resumed on January 4 in southern Peru and which maintain blockades on the country’s main routes.

In addition, Boluarte once again ruled out his resignation.

I will leave when we have called the general elections (…) I have no intention of staying in power, he said emphatically, adding that Congress “without a doubt” will confirm in February the early elections, scheduled for April 2024.

“Would my resignation solve the crisis and the violence? Who would assume the presidency of the Republic?”, he pointed out when asked by the press about his permanence in office.

A hit for convenience

Boluarte emphasized that he occupies the presidency by constitutional mandate and attributed the version that she has given a blow to former President Castillo, to a “narrative of groups of radical people based on drug trafficking, illegal mining, and smuggling,” who, according to her, would also be behind the violent protests.

“The only truthgentlemen of the world and of Peru, is that there was a coup d’état on December 7a failed coup,” he said.

The way Pedro Castillo came out It is a way of victimizing himself to say that a coup d’état has taken place when he is the author of his own coup d’état, and not leave due to the pressure of the 57 tax folders that he has against him for acts of corruption,” said Boluarte. .

For Castillo “it was convenient for him to carry out a self-coup to victimize himself and move all this paramilitary apparatus and not respond to the public ministry for the acts of corruption for which they are being denounced. There is no victim here, Mr. Castillo, there is a country here that he is bleeding to death as a result of his irresponsibility,” he said.

“With the truth” before the OAS

Boluarte, who will participate online in a session before the Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday, said that his intention is to “report the truth,”

“Tomorrow I will appear before the OAS to inform the truth, the Peruvian government and even less Dina Boluarte have something to hide, I have always spoken with the truth, looking ahead at my brothers and sisters, there are 50 people killed in these acts of protest , it hurts me, as a woman, mother and daughter, it hurts me,” she said.

Boluarte indicated that the Government invited the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and also received a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights so that they can learn about the events that have occurred in recent weeks. We all want to know the truth,” he said.
