The delivery of German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine will further negatively affect the already poor relations between Moscow and Berlin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned of this.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on Tuesday about Germany’s possible consent to the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to the Ukrainian armed forces:
“Relationships are already not special. There is no substantive dialogue with Germany and the other EU and NATO member states. However, such supplies do not bode well for future relations. They will leave their mark.”
The possible delivery of German Leopard tanks to Ukraine has been discussed for a few weeks since these vehicles cannot be transferred without the approval of the manufacturing country. During the debate on Tuesday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg invoked NATO unity:
“At this crucial moment in the war, we need to provide Ukraine with heavier and more advanced systems, and we need to do it faster. The only way to a lasting peace is to make it clear to Putin that he will not win on the battlefield. “
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also expects a quick decision from Germany, he said at a meeting with Stoltenberg in Berlin:
“I expect that a decision will be made shortly.”
Shortly before that, the Polish government had applied to Germany for delivery approval for 14 Leopard 2 battle tanks.
The former inspector general of the Bundeswehr and chairman of the NATO military committee Harald Kujat explained the background of the events in an interview with the Swiss medium Current affairs in focusthat some of the Federal Republic’s “allies” in the debate about the supply of main battle tanks are also concerned with exposing Germany. Literally the general said:
“In the German discussion, these connections are not understood or ignored. The way in which some allies are trying to publicly urge the federal government to deliver Leopard 2 main battle tanks also plays a role. NATO has done so so far It shows how much Germany’s reputation in the alliance has suffered as a result of the weakening of the Bundeswehr and with what commitment some allies are pursuing the goal of exposing Germany to Russia in particular.”
