The climate activists from “Last Generation” want to expand their blockade and disruptive actions to all of Germany this year. The “resistance will be greater than ever,” said a spokeswoman for the group on Monday.

The climate protection protest group “Last Generation” has announced that it will significantly expand its blockade and disruption campaigns throughout Germany this year.

“The resistance is growing stronger than ever,” said Aimée van Baalen, a spokeswoman for the group, on Monday. “We will take to the streets massively.” From February 6, protest actions should take place “in all regions of Germany”.

“We will interrupt everyday life in this republic in as many places as possible.” One wants to carry the disruptions “to every town and village, with more and more people”. The group did not say exactly what the actions should look like.

A year ago, on January 24, 2022, the group blocked a street in Berlin for the first time. This was followed by numerous blockades on motorways with long traffic jams and disruptions in museums and ministries. Demonstrators often taped themselves to make the evacuation last as long as possible.

The last generation now hopes that more and more people will participate to bring the country “to a standstill”. That is a “decisive factor,” said van Baalen.

Last year, around 800 people got stuck in blockades in many cities, said spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs. An exact number of supporters is not known. “There are so many people, hundreds, we don’t know exactly.” Either the government must “lock us all away” or accept the demands.

The last generation called on the federal government to convene a “social council” in which randomly drawn people sit. The Council should develop concepts to make Germany “climate neutral” from 2030.

Some supporters are paid by the group and an associated initiative from donations, primarily for speaking engagements and other educational work, according to the transparency report. Last year, more than EUR 900,000 in donations were received. The group spent EUR 535,000.
