Certainly no manufacturer wants to get this stamp for his product! Every year, the consumer advice center in Hamburg – vzhh for short – awards the title of “deceptive package of the year” – and for the past year 2022, a winner was promptly found again…
In recent years, the winners have mainly been items that have either experienced a huge price increase or whose content has changed without any information, thus misleading the consumer. Which product do you think will take first place this time?
Kaufland, Rewe and Co: “Deceptive packaging 2022” available everywhere
For the consumer advice center in Hamburg, the winner of 2022 with a proud 41.7 percent was apparently determined fairly quickly: Rama from the manufacturer Upfield. The product received the gold medal with a clear lead over the competition. The vzhh also explained its decision in its press release.
In the case of margarine, the packaging was primarily criticized. The problem: Although the pack of the Rama product remained the same size, the content was reduced by 100 grams – instead of the previous 500 gram pack, customers at Kaufland, Rewe and Co. only receive 400 grams of content. When filling the can, product was simply saved and more air was trapped up to the lid – the hidden price increase was 25 percent.
Consumer center is shocked
“Upfield now needs half a million more plastic cups to fill 1,000 tons of Rama,” the consumer advice center said, explaining the criticism of the deceptive packaging with regard to the environment. It can’t go on like this. The vzhh has filed a lawsuit against the Rama manufacturer Upfield.
Although the legal requirements are incompletely fulfilled, one can still speak of a clear misleading of consumers in this case – at least that was the conclusion in the vzhh report. In any case, it remains to be seen whether the consumer advice center will be successful with its accusation and whether the product will soon be available in its original form at Kaufland, Rewe and Co.
