“Ice Merchants”, by João Gonzalez, is the first Portuguese film nominated for an Oscar

Historic day for Portugal and for the director John Gonzalez. Ice Merchantshis animated short film, is on the list of nominees for the Oscars – released this Tuesday, January 24th – , something unprecedented for Portuguese cinema.

The work is a candidate for the Best Animated Short Film award, a nomination that the young director thanked on social media. “I am completely speechless. Thank you all so much for the love. I’ll write something when things are calmer and I’m ‘back down to earth’ and able to process this. Thank you and congratulations to the whole team!”, he wrote in his account on Instagram.

abreast of Ice Merchants are also nominated for the award for Best Animated Short Film “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse”by Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud, “The Flying Sailor”by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, “My Year of Dicks”by Sara Gunnarsdóttir, and “An Ostrich Told Me the World Is Fake and I Think I Believe It”by Lachlan Pendragon.

This is the third film by the Portuguese director and tells, without lines, the story of a man and his son, who daily parachute from their house, which is perched on top of a precipice, to travel to the village located on the plain below, where they sell the ice they produce during the night.

It should be remembered that the 95th edition of the Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 12th.
