In the first reactions, politicians from the Greens and FDP as well as the Union parties welcome Chancellor Scholz’s decision to deliver German Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine. However, it is criticized that this decision would have taken too long. The left and the AfD criticize the move.

After Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) decided that Germany would supply Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine, it was not surprising that arms lobbyist Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), who was also a member of the German Bundestag and chairwoman of the Defense Committee, welcomed this decision. However, she complained that this took so long and said the dpa:

“The decision was tough, it took far too long, but in the end it is inevitable. The fact that Germany is allowing partner countries to deliver its Leopard 2 tank and is also delivering it itself is relieving news for the battered and brave Ukrainian people.”

Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany and current Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrei Melnyk hailed the planned delivery to his country and wrote on Twitter: “Hallelujah! Jesus Christ!” But obviously the tanks are not enough for him, since he is now also demanding further weapon systems:

“And now, dear allies, let’s build a strong fighter jet coalition for Ukraine, with F-16s and F-35s, Eurofighters and Tornados, Rafale and Gripen jets – and everything you can deliver to Ukraine .”

Leading politicians of the Free Democrats were “grateful that the continuous commitment to the people of Ukraine is successful”. FDP faction leader Christian Dürr also praised the decision:

“The Chancellor made a decision today that no one took lightly.”

The chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Friedrich Merz (CDU), struck a similar note, welcoming the decision but at the same time accusing Chancellor Scholz of his “hesitancy”. Opposite of dpa said Merz on Tuesday in Berlin that the decision was “right”. However, he criticized that Scholz did not “announce the decision together with the French President (Emmanuel Macron)”, for example on the “appropriate” occasion on Sunday at the Franco-German Council of Ministers on the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty in Paris.

“So the image of a driven person who has hesitated too long remains.”

The reactions of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen were similar: the chairman of the European Committee in the German Bundestag, Anton Hofreiter, who discovered his enthusiasm for the German military after his defeat in the party’s internal struggle for the post he had longed for as Minister of Agriculture, said to him Editorial Network Germany:

“Of course it would have been better to make the decision sooner, especially for Germany’s reputation in Europe. But better late than never.”

Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) tweeted on Tuesday:

“The #Leopard‘s freed! Hopefully now he can quickly help Ukraine in its fight against the Russian attack and for the freedom of Ukraine and Europe.”

Criticism of German tank deliveries came from the AfD, which described the Chancellor’s decision as “irresponsible and dangerous”. The leader of the Bundestag faction, Tino Chrupalla, said in Berlin on Tuesday:

“Germany is in danger of being dragged directly into the war. Our armed forces are being further plundered by the delivery of tanks from Bundeswehr stocks.”

In doing so, the Chancellor was jeopardizing the security of Germany and all of its citizens, he warned urgently. The parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch of the party Die Linke also criticized the federal government’s decision to send Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine:

“The delivery of Leopard main battle tanks, lifting another taboo, potentially takes us closer to World War III than to peace in Europe.”

Leopard tanks are the prelude “to a possible slide towards catastrophe”. Calls for battle tanks would be followed by calls for warplanes and more.

“The decision to continue making Germany a war party does not have a majority in the population.”

The well-known member of parliament Sevim Dağdelen from the Left Party wrote on Twitter:

“The USA is sending Germany into the fire like a vassal. Decision of #Traffic light at the behest of Washington, Germany is preparing the way for the #War. Fatal that #Scholz crossed the red line he himself had once drawn. Now is the time to stop the warmongers! #Leopard
