Der Spiegel: Germany will give Ukraine Leopard tanks

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to transfer German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Der Spiegel writes about this without citing sources. There is no official confirmation of this yet.

According to the publication, we are talking about the transfer of at least one Leopard 2A6 tank from the warehouses of the Bundeswehr.

Germany is also ready to agree to Ukraine receiving Leopard tanks, which are in service with other European countries.

Kyiv has long asked the Western allies for tanks. The discussion of this topic intensified in early 2023, before the anniversary of the war and against the backdrop of warnings from Ukraine about a new offensive that Russia is allegedly planning in the spring.

Last week Suddeutsche Zeitung and The Wall Street Journal reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is ready to provide Leopard to Ukraine only on condition that American Abrams tanks are supplied. Previously, Washington refused to supply them.

The German authorities came under pressure due to the delay in the transfer of tanks. Poland, which agreed to hand over its Leopard 2s to Ukraine but could not do so without German consent, publicly allowed a “smaller coalition” to be formed to support Ukraine.

On January 22, the German Foreign Ministry said that Germany would not interfere with third countries if they decide to supply Leopard 2 to Ukraine. January 24 Poland announcedwhich officially requested Germany’s consent to the transfer of Leopard 2 to Ukraine.

On the same day, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House was leaning towards sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine and thus getting Germany to agree to send the Leopard. According to the publication, Abrams deliveries could be announced as early as this week.
