After a brief onset of winter last week, the weather in North Rhine-Westphalia is currently on its mild side. In the last few days, temperatures have risen into the double-digit range in many places. This will not change much towards the weekend.

But soon there is a threat of change in NRW. Weather expert Dominik Jung looks at the latest forecasts with astonishment: “My dear man (…) It’s hard to believe what’s being thrown out there.”

Weather in NRW: Strong forecast – up to -15 degrees

According to calculations by the American weather service “NOAA”, we are soon threatened with a strong cold whip with daytime temperatures between 0 and -8 degrees. At night, the values in Germany could even drop to -15 degrees. This is due to a “cold bell” that threatens to approach from the east.

Should the icy eastern location prevail, we would have to reckon with permafrost in NRW from St. Nicholas Day. However, due to the intense cold, little precipitation is expected. Children will probably have to be patient for a well-groomed toboggan run. However, meteorologist Dominik Jung also emphasizes that the forecast is still uncertain. It is also possible that warm air masses from the west will prevail in the week between the second and third Advent.

Weather in NRW: Experts change the forecast

However, the US weather model has adjusted the monthly forecast as a precautionary measure in view of the impending onset of winter. So it looks like the temperatures in December should not differ from previous calculations from the climate average of the last 30 years.

Weather forecast in North Rhine-Westphalia: These are the temperatures for the next few days:

  • Friday: 9 to 12 degrees, at night 6 to 3 degrees
  • Saturday: 7 to 10 degrees, at night 6 to 2 degrees
  • Sunday: 8 to 11 degrees, at night 6 to 3 degrees
