Last September, a judge from Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona) agreed to send a Shakira for six crimes against the Public Treasury, for which the Prosecutor’s Office asks him for a total of eight years and two months in prison and a fine of 23.8 million euros.
Now, just two months later, the defense of the Colombian singer has issued a statement in which “denounces the methods of the Treasury after paying more than 90 million euros and being persecuted even for years in which she did not spend even 60 days in Spain”.
Her new legal team states in the letter that “Shakira is a taxpayer who has always had impeccable tax conduct and has never had tax problems in any other jurisdiction“. He also adds that “the singer relied on first-line advisors such as PriceWaterhouseCoopers.”
The lawyer reaffirms that Shakira “he never exceeded the 183 days of presence in Spain required to be a tax resident” and that, even so, “he has been fiercely persecuted in the criminal and media sphere using unacceptable methods to attack his reputation and force him to reach an agreement”.
“Shakira has already paid more than 90 million euros by worldwide income that has not been generated in Spain and by its international heritage, without having its business center in this country where it never obtained significant benefits”, they conclude.
Finally, as they have done in the rest of their statements, they add that “Shakira continues to maintain her firm will to comply with all her tax duties in Spain, as well as in all the countries in which she has resided or worked during her long professional career. Finally, Shakira wishes to express her absolute confidence in the independence of the Spanish Justice and her firm conviction that, After trial, your full innocence will prevail“.
