You are currently viewing Qatar – Senegal: After another defeat – the host threatens a super meltdown

On Friday (November 25) hosts Qatar played their second game at this year’s World Cup against Senegal. Even before the game it was clear that only a win for the Qataris would be enough to keep hopes of progressing alive.

After Qatar’s defeat against Senegal, the elimination is not yet sealed – but the World Cup hosts are now threatened with a super meltdown.

Qatar – Senegal: hosts before the end

The duel between Qatar and Senegal was eagerly awaited. Finally, the reigning Asian champions met the reigning African champions. Both teams still had hopes of progressing. But after the 1:3 defeat of the World Cup hosts, the knockout round for Qatar was a long way off.

Now the Asian champion is threatened with a super Gau. Qatar are without a point after their first two group games. If coach Felix Sanchez’s side fail to secure at least a draw in the third group game, Qatar would become the first host country to be eliminated from the tournament without a single point. Of course only if Ecuador defeats the Netherlands in the other group duel.

Qatar historically bad

Since the introduction of the three-point rule in the World Cup tables in 1994, no host country has “managed” to drop out of the tournament without a point or a win. Worst records so far have been South Africa 2010 and USA 1994, each collecting just four points in the group stage. Not enough for the round of 16. But Qatar can no longer reach even this mark.
