Belgium and the United Kingdom have been locked in dispute, after Brussels refused to hand over to its NATO ally essential equipment for nuclear deterrence, reports The Times.

The Belgian federal government refused two weeks ago to authorize the supply to London of a isostatic press necessary to maintain the British nuclear arsenal. The rejection was due to a veto by the Greens, who are part of the ruling coalition.

The dispute has been exacerbated by reports, reportedly circulating within the Belgian government, that London has threatened to cancel a €600 million order for Belgian FN Herstal machine guns. ($625 million) in the event that the delivery of said press is not authorized.

The outlet cites government sources that express their concern about the possibility that the dispute undermine unity in Europe and NATO, at a time when the war in Ukraine is taking place.
