In the past week, more cases of flu were reported across Austria than in the previous weeks. Vienna, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Styria are particularly affected. Influenza infections, i.e. colds, are also on the rise again.
In the previous week there were an estimated almost 2700 new cases of influenza and flu infections in Austria. With this figure from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), it should be noted that it was calculated per 100,000 inhabitants, so the total number of new infections is significantly higher. The City of Vienna’s flu reporting service estimated 16,250 new flu infections and influenza cases in the past week. These are higher numbers than in the past three years of the corona pandemic. No flu epidemic yet, according to the Center for Virology at MedUni Vienna. In the past two weeks, there had been almost 11,000 cases in the federal capital, which was relatively constant. However, very few cases are secured. For example, flu is reported by a few selected resident doctors in all federal states and by hospital staff when patients have to be treated as inpatients. Older people in particular are vaccinatedCurrently, flu vaccinations are carried out regularly, for example free of charge in more than 1000 surgeries in Vienna. Around 200,000 vaccine doses could be administered here. That’s about half of the total quota the city has earmarked for this winter. “The rush is enormous, especially among senior citizens,” said the deputy chairwoman of the Curia for resident doctors of the Vienna Medical Association, Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied. According to the MedUni, the viruses that have been detected in Austria so far should match well with the vaccine strains in the vaccines.
