Since the end of October, FC Schalke 04 has been without a sports director. Rouven Schröder resigned his post in the middle of the season and left S04 almost overnight.
FC Schalke 04 has not yet presented a successor. In the meantime, however, the first names are haunting the Veltins Arena. Now there seems to be a new candidate.
FC Schalke 04: Schröder successor? HE is a candidate
Most recently, Hannover’s Marcus Mann was associated with FC Schalke 04. His contract with 96 expires at the end of the season, so it would definitely be a candidate. Gerald Asamoah is also mentioned again and again, but for whom the step is probably too early. Now “Bild” brings a new candidate into the conversation.
Benjamin Schmedes is said to be on the FC Schalke 04 list. The 37-year-old played for Hannover 96 in his youth, but missed the leap to becoming a professional soccer player. From 2014 to 2017 he worked as chief scout at Hamburger SV. From 2017 to 2021 he worked for VfL Osnabrück, first as sports director and later as sports director. He then moved to Vitesse Arnhem in February 2022. His contract there runs until 2024.
Schalke boss Peter Knäbel knows Schmedes from his time at Hamburger SV. There they worked together for two years and, according to the report, should have a “top wire”.
This is how Schalke is currently positioning itself
The “Sports Director” team at FC Schalke 04 currently consists of five people: Peter Knäbel (Sports Director), René Grotus (Sports Officer), Mario Grevelhörster (Team Manager), Gerald Asamoah (Head of the Licensed Players Department) and André Hechelmann (Chief Scout) .
During the winter break, however, Knäbel wanted to see who would be best suited for the position of sports director. “I would guarantee that our people have a chance to show themselves and that we will make a decision afterwards,” said Knäbel at the time. So far, however, a decision is still pending. Whether there is an internal or external solution is still completely open.
