You are currently viewing Borussia Dortmund: Coach makes decision – and has to live with bitter consequences

There is a lot of Borussia Dortmund in the 2022 World Cup. BVB has released numerous players for the tournament. Some were able to celebrate success on the first day of the game, others like the DFB players around Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck suffered a defeat.

But that is not how it remains. A coach from Borussia Dortmund is also on duty at the World Cup. His name? Otto Addo. The top talent coach is in charge of the Ghanaian national team on an interim basis. In the opening game, however, one of his decisions had bitter consequences.

Borussia Dortmund: Addo the hero

Addo is already a kind of superstar in Ghana. There was great sadness after the “Black Stars” were disappointingly eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations in January. After the embarrassment, they worried about qualifying for the World Cup. Coach Milovan Rajevac has been sacked. Instead, efforts were made to addo.

However, he needed the approval of Borussia Dortmund, where he is actually employed. He got them and led Ghana to Qatar through two draws against Nigeria. The jubilation in the African country was enormous.

Ups and downs of feelings

And so the Ghanaian association “borrowed” Addo as a coach for the World Cup. There he and his team met the favored Portuguese on Thursday (November 24). But Ghana stood with and against. It was only a controversial penalty that gave superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s team the lead.

Then Ghana struck. Mohammed Kudus, by far the strongest player, initiated the equalizer through captain Andre Ayew. The cheers were loud on the pitch and in the stands. Could the sensation really succeed? But then Addo made a momentous decision: he substituted Kudus and Ayew.

Borussia Dortmund: Addo team loses

A move that should take revenge immediately. Just seconds after Ghana’s two most notable players left the field, Portugal struck. Joao Felix and Rafael Leao scored two goals within a very short time. Ghana’s connection to 2: 3 came too late.

Whether Ghana would have scored against the Ronaldo team if Kudus and Ayew had stayed on the pitch is of course anyone’s guess. But it was quite telling that things went downhill for the Addo team as the two stars left the field.

Also interesting for you:

There are now two extremely important games for the Borussia Dortmund talent coach. South Korea and Uruguay are still waiting in Group H. Ghana is not without a chance. They sold well against Portugal – until the double change caused Addo’s team to break up.
