You are currently viewing Another 0-0 at the World Cup: Uruguay and South Korea cannot hurt each other

The vast majority of Belgian pronostikeurs had tipped Uruguay for this match, but in the first half there was not much to see on the field. South Korea started with high pressure and a lot of enthusiasm, but without any real chances.

It had to wait until the 23rd minute for that. Pellistri was ejected by an excellent Gimenez and threw for. Suarez was central but just too small in shoe size to tap the ball in.

South Korea responded with a nice play from Sang-Ho Na on the right side. Hwang had made a good run in the centre, but his shot hit the crossbar. Angry Uruguayans on the defensive.

Just before the break, a Uruguayan defender took the lead. Godin was pulled forward for a corner, and was the best jumper. He could also head, but just not enough. His attempt hit the post.

In the second half it was again the Koreans who got off to a good start. Gimenez had to throw himself for a shot and two minutes later South Korea wanted a penalty. Not a realistic question, Turpin thought.

After an hour, Cavani was allowed to come in, and with one of his first touches he was able to turn in the Korean sixteen. Good defending by a Kim prevented his shot from going more than a few inches.

The Asian team then forced two chances, with a blocked cross from flashy but volatile Son, and a shot from Cho that bounced wide. Federico Valverde responded on the other side with a thunderclap of a shot, which hit the outside of the intersection.

In the final phase we got some chaos. Goalkeeper Rochet couldn’t get a mediocre pass past Cho, who served Son for a shot a meter wide.

Two teams that didn’t want to lose didn’t today, although South Korea will be happier with the point than Uruguay. Against Ghana and Portugal they will both really have to come out of their shells.
