The Minister of the Interior (s) Manuel Monsalve, criticized the maintenance of the truckers’ strike and that the sectors that yesterday sat down to talk and reached an agreement with the Executive today are unaware of the advances that include more resources for the Price Stabilization Mechanism of the fuels.
“It is a strike that attacks Chilean men and women” Monsalve commented from the Congress in Valparaíso, where he recalled that if necessary the Government will apply the State Security Law to end the cuts on different routes in the country.
“An interest group to which the Government has responded, has put a large amount of resources, has no basis to alter the normal functioning of the country. We are going to use all the tools that the rule of law gives us. If that implies using the State Security Law, the Government is going to use the State Security Law”, held authority.
Monsalve highlighted that the agreement signed yesterday with the different transport unions contemplates the injection of another US$ 1,500 million, to which are added those already disbursed from the fiscal coffers to MEPCO, as well as a freeze on the price of diesel that has a cost that also reaches 1.5 billion US dollars.
“If we add only these two measurements, we are talking about a fiscal cost of US$ 6 billion dollars”specified the deputy minister, recalling that the delivery of the PGU to 2 million retirees from the most vulnerable sectors reaches 6.8 billion dollars.
“The effort that is being made to alleviate the rise in the cost of fuels It is of the same fiscal magnitude as the payment of the PGU to more than two million Chileans. That is the magnitude of the effort that this government is making – which we know is real – which is the increase in the cost of fuels.”Monsalve stressed.
On the other hand, he recalled that in the conversation with the transportation leaders “he promised to update the transportation cost index with the truckers. I want to tell you that this is the mechanism by which the rates paid to truckers are set and therefore this implies that they will be able to access better contracts and better rates”.
In addition, “we committed a set of security measures collecting all the demands raised by the truckers”.
That is why he insisted that “there is no basis for the truckers’ strike to continue. There are fewer grounds for those who were sitting at the table, spent hours talking, and reached an agreement, then desist from that agreement, as is the case of the National Confederation of Cargo Transport”.
In this sense, he pointed out that “as this affects the lives of Chileans, The Government is going to use all the tools that the rule of law gives it to protect the normal functioning of the country and to protect the most vulnerable sectors”.
