Attention account holders at the Sparkasse! The financial institution is changing its policies, so customers need to pay attention to an important detail. A symbol on your EC card at the savings bank will tell you whether you are also affected.

More and more people are saying goodbye to cash. Last but not least, the pandemic has fueled the move away from coins and notes. As a result, more and more ATMs in Germany are closing. A detail on the plastic reveals whether you will soon be able to pay with your Sparkasse card as usual.

Sparkasse will soon no longer issue Maestro cards

“A Sparkasse card (debit card) is often equipped with functions for using the debit card for cashless payment transactions in euros or in foreign currencies abroad. Outside of Germany, either the ‘Maestro’ or ‘V-Pay’ system is used. You can see which system is combined with your own Girocard by the logo on the front of the card,” explains the Sparkasse.

Because Mastercard has discontinued the corresponding service, the Sparkasse will no longer issue Maestro cards from July 2023. For customers, however, the all-clear is given! All bank cards remain valid until their expiry date. This affects copies that do not go beyond the year 2027.
