At the Main Theater of the Matucana Cultural Center 100 arrives “Coriolanus 2073” on November 24, a creation born from the union of the companies TeatroPan, Teatro Onirus and Lafamiliateatro. The play is a co-production between the Matucana 100 Cultural Center, the Maule Regional Theater and the Ovalle Municipal Theater.
The play takes as its starting point the massacre that occurred at Coriolano’s debut in May 2029moving forward 44 years to present an unfair and devastating future in which a group of citizens, linked by blood, plans a subversive act in memory of their ancestor who was part of the cast of that massacre.
In his plot, the year was 2025 and against all odds the Candidate “K” wins the presidential elections in Chile. A few hours after assuming, enacts severe laws to curtail civil liberties. In the midst of strong citizen demonstrations, on May 11, 2029, during the premiere of the local version of Coriolano by William Shakespeare, a massacre perpetrated by state agents occurs. After this fact, a law is decreed that, among other prohibitions, puts an end to the free exercise of the theater.
This is the premise proposed by “Coriolano 2073”, which is financed by the Fund for the Promotion and Development of Performing Arts, Call 2021. The play had some debut performances at the Ovalle Municipal Theater and then at the Regional Theater of Maule, arriving at Matucana 100 with its first season until December 11.
“This proposal arises from the creative power of three companies that, together, exchange knowledge, broaden their views and deepen visions. After a painstaking research process, this show aims to generate a scenic-digital experience carefully crafted, profound significance and innovative language, both for its writing and staging”, said the playwright of the play, Eduardo Luna.
Using the format of Theater Document -with various materials that allow the story to be linked, such as data, images, the press and objects from a fictional story that transitions between what appears to be real and what could become so- the montage advances half a century, situating itself in a territorial reorganization in which Chile has disappeared as an administration forming part of the American Union (AU). The new regime divides the population between a few who live in biomes or natural reserves, from where they control life, and many others who inhabit the metropolises, hyper-controlled spaces where social contact is null, limiting themselves to production and digital services.
“We went tos events that have marked the social and political agenda in recent years, to establish a kind of search engine in the history of our country, linked to similar processes. The information collected is used to establish a projection of what could happen in Chile between the years 2023 and 2073configuring a dystopia, based on events that, although they never happened, could happen if the events took another direction”, added the director of the piece, Jaime Reyes.
