The earthquake registered this morning in the Turkish province of Duzce, 200 kilometers east of Istanbul, caused at least 46 injuries, one of them in critical condition, according to a new assessment by the authorities.

The information was provided by the Turkish Health Minister, Fahrettin Koca. The previous toll pointed to 22 wounded.

The earthquake in the northwest of the country was felt in the cities of Istanbul and Ankara, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Turkish authorities.

Turkey is located in one of the most active seismic zones in the world.

In January 2000, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Elazig, killing over 40 people.

In November of the same year, a magnitude 7 earthquake in the Aegean Sea killed 114 people and injured more than a thousand in Turkey.
