It has been clear for some time that the love between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United had cooled completely. With a scathing TV interview in which he razed the club to the ground, the Portuguese also implicitly filed divorce papers a week ago.

Despite the World Cup in Qatar, they were signed by both parties faster than expected. Manchester United announced on Tuesday that they have agreed in consultation with Ronaldo to end their cooperation with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution in 2 spells at Old Trafford, with 145 goals in 346 games. We wish him and his family the best for the future,” Manchester United said in a statement.

“Everyone in the club remains focused on becoming stronger under Erik ten Hag. Together we work to be successful on the field.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is currently playing with Portugal at the World Cup in Qatar. The Portuguese will play their first group match against Ghana on Thursday.

Ronaldo still had a contract at Old Trafford until the end of the season, but since the arrival of coach Erik ten Hag last summer, the attacker has played less and less in the piece. He has only scored once in the Premier League this season.
