The statements of the suspect, a 42-year-old man, and the “comments he made” during the attack on Paul Pelosi indicate that it was a “politically motivated” attack, Jenkins said at a news conference.

David DePape, originally from Canada, was arrested the same Friday, when the Police arrived at the scene, and is already facing a federal charge that will be carried out “in parallel” with the investigation by the Californian state justice, explained the prosecutor. .

The defendant faces seven criminal charges: attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, abuse and unlawful detention of an older adult, and threats against a public official and his family.

The preliminary investigation makes it clear that Pelosi’s home and herself were “specifically targeted” by the shooter, against whom state prosecutors will also file a no-bail warrant, Jenkins added.

The prosecutor took advantage of her intervention to ask political leaders and citizens to “watch their words” and lower the tone of political discourse in the country.

“Violence has no place in San Francisco or in politics,” Jenkins stressed.

On the same Monday, the United States Department of Justice filed the federal indictment against DePape, with charges of assault and attempted kidnapping, which carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

Paul Pelosi was attacked in San Francisco (California) when he was at the family home. The assailant burst into the house shouting “Where is Nancy?”, although she was in Washington DC at the time, and attacked her husband with a hammer to the head.

The investigation is still open, but it is already known that the attacker forced his entry through the back door of the house. The attacker was carrying another hammer, in addition to the one he used for the attack, some strapping, rope and duct tape, the district attorney detailed.

The husband of the president of the Lower House was taken to Zuckerberg General Hospital, in San Francisco, and successfully intervened for a skull fracture and various serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

The attack took place less than two weeks before the legislative elections on November 8, in which the entire House of Representatives and a third of the seats in the Senate will be renewed.
