2022 Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (Wi-Fi, 128GB) – Space Gray (6th generation)

  • Screen: The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is big. Very big. Its 14.6-inch screen makes it one of the largest tablets on the market. A large, high-quality Super AMOLED panel with a refresh rate of 120 Hz with which it is a delight to consume multimedia content, even in high dynamic range HDR10. It’s like carrying a small portable television. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2022) is no slouch: High-resolution Mini-LED panel with 120Hz ProMotion technology and Dolby Vision support. It is somewhat smaller than the Ultra, but also easier to transport. It depends on whether you are looking for the largest size or prefer something more “compact”.

  • Processor, RAM and storage: Apple bets on its latest chip, the M2, for your new tablet, making it very powerful and without any performance problems at the operating system or application level. It offers 8 or 16 GB of RAM, but it depends on the storage, and it is so that the tablet can handle the 1 or 2 TB, and the end user should not notice a difference in performance. Storage options range from 128GB to 2TB. For its part, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra has the best of Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and offers three different RAM options: 8, 12 or 16 GB. Android manages RAM differently than iOS, and more might be better in this case. Although storage can be chosen between 128, 256 or 512 GB, Samsung has included a microSDXC slot for easy storage expansion.

  • Operating system: The iPad has iPadOS 16, an operating system that Apple develops exclusively for its tablets and that has functions that are not available for iPhone. Although there are very interesting apps that try to take advantage of their full potential (the DaVinci video editor joins the App Store), iPadOS does not accompany, and that Apple has included a kind of window manager, Stage Manager, which we didn’t like too much because it wasn’t entirely comfortable. It is true that on Android there are not so many applications adapted to tablets or that take full advantage of the hardware, but Samsung has done a good job with its One UI customization layer and the Samsung DeX mode, which activates a desktop mode with real multitasking and a window manager like the one found in Windows or macOS. In other words, with the Samsung tablet we are closer to a conventional laptop than with the iPad, and without forgetting that it is a tablet.

  • cameras: the most important camera of a tablet is the front one and not so much the rear one, since the usefulness in this type of device is more to make video calls than to take photos. In this section, the two do quite well.: 12 MP TrueDepth on iPad Pro with Center Framing feature and dual 12 MP cameras (wide and ultra wide) on Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

  • connectivity: Wi-Fi of the latest generation, Bluetooth to connect devices without cables and USB-C. In the iPad Pro we have Thunderbolt 4 technology and Apple has finally improved the support for external monitors, which is related to the Center Stage function. The Samsung can also connect to external monitors via cable with Samsung DeX or even wirelessly on “smart” monitors or certain televisions.

  • Drums: Apple promises that its 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2022) has a battery life of up to 10 hours per charge. Samsung specifies up to 8 hours surfing the Internet on Wi-Fi or up to 14 hours of video playback time.

  • Stylus: The Apple Pencil is one of the best accessories for the iPad, but you have to buy it separately. And it’s not cheap. In the Apple Store it has a PVP of 149 euros (it has also increased in price). The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is also compatible with a stylus, the S Pen, and has very similar functions and very little latency. The most important thing in the case of Samsung is that it is included with the purchase of the tabletwhich is greatly appreciated.

  • Price: we move on to the most complicated point. Apple has raised the price of many of its products in Spain, both old and new, and this iPad Pro is no exception. Now it starts at 1,449 euros (the previous generation was 1,199 euros), a great cost for the 128 GB model. The Samsung started at 1,149 euros, but in the official store it is now for 999 euros, and it is not uncommon to find it cheaper in other stores.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022) VS Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, which one to buy?

iPad Pro 2022

Apple has made its iPads the preferred option when thinking about tablets thanks to its extensive catalog of applications. iPadOS may still be an operating system that doesn’t do justice to the powerful hardware that iPads come with, but app developers like LumaFusion, Procreate, and Ferrite have made this device shine. It is just the opposite in the case of Samsung: a large part of the apps in the Play Store are not adapted to large screens and there are not as many “professional” apps as in iPadOS, but Samsung has managed to differentiate itself from the rest of Android tablets with One UI.

If you are within the Apple ecosystem, with the iPad Pro we will enjoy great integration with the rest of the devices. The same happens if we have more Samsung devices. It is a matter of taste, just like if we prefer iPadOS or Android. But if we are looking for a tablet with which to be more productive, the Samsung is one step ahead with DeX and multitasking. It is also compatible with keyboards with trackpads.

and it’s also the question of price. The iPad Pro was already expensive before and it is even more so now with the price rise. And that the software does not accompany the hardware is difficult to justify the purchase, especially when the differences with an iPad Pro from 2018, for example, in this sense are minimal. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is around a thousand euros, but at least it includes the S Pen and has a larger high-quality screen, which together with the software could become a better substitute for a traditional computer with desktop mode, at less in office.
