Mendy faces 5 to 20 years in prison. But in the worst case scenario, the court can sentence the player to life in prison.

The last time the French defender of Manchester City entered the field was on August 15, 2021. A few days later he was arrested. By that time, the 2018 world champion as part of the French national team had played 75 matches for the Citizens, scoring two goals. But immediately after the charges were brought, Mendy’s career was effectively over. The club withdrew Mendy from the squad and stopped selling merchandise bearing his name and likeness, with the following statement: Manchester City have suspended Benjamin Mendy pending the completion of legal proceedings. This issue is related to the legal process, so the club is no longer commenting on the situation until the end of the trial.

Electronic Arts also joined the sanctions, which officially excluded the player from the FIFA 22 game and removed the defender card from the FIFA Ultimate Team and Ultimate Draf sets.

The process has been going on for more than a year, the first few months of which the footballer spent in a maximum security prison, where Mendy suffered a nervous breakdown. After several meetings, the Frenchman’s lawyers managed to drop the charges against him in one of the rapes and achieve bail.

From the very beginning of the criminal prosecution, the athlete insists on his complete innocence. At a recent meeting at the Chester Crown Court, Mendy delivered another appeal to the jury, in which he denied all charges against him. The 28-year-old defender of the “townspeople” claims that all episodes of alleged rape are sex by mutual agreement. Mendy emphasized that the girls themselves asked for it to go to his house, and the conditions for these meetings were agreed with them in advance. The testimonies of the victims themselves are radically different from the words of the world champion – according to the girls, everything happened according to one scenario: the Frenchman invited them to his mansion, where he locked them up and raped them.

The next hearing in this case is scheduled for November 15. Lawyers expect the final verdict in the difficult and high-profile trial of Benjamin Mendy not earlier than the end of December this year or the beginning of January next. Too many victims: at the next hearing, all the injured women will testify before the jury. In addition, the court decided to use for sentencing the testimony of the French lateral teammates at Man City – Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker, Riyad Mahrez, John Stones and Raheem Sterling (who left this summer for Chelsea – ed.), whom brought in as witnesses.
