The Grand Prix of Mexico has seen great figures parade, but few with a heart as divided as that of Frenchman Andre Pierre Gignac, striker for Tigres and figure for Olympique de Marseille, whom we ran into at the Autodromo de los Hermanos Rodriguez visiting the AlphaTauri suite, Pierre Gasly’s team, who has repeatedly proclaimed his love for Paris Saint Germain.

That a Frenchman supports another Frenchman would not be great news, but in this case it is impossible to ignore the antagonism that exists between Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint Germain, arch-rivals that season after season compete for “Le Classique” in French football in one of the fiercest rivalries in European football.

“He’s not my friend, but he invited me” jokes a smiling and relaxed Andre Pierre Gignac in a brief chat with prior to qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix.

“We are French above all”, continues the joke, before thanking (now seriously) Pierre Gasly’s invitation: “I have had the opportunity to talk with him, although we still haven’t met in person, but thank you very much for the invitation. , and we are going to support him and the luck that I have is Checo who is Mexican and who races in front of his public, he races with Red Bull and AlphaTauri is part of Red Bull, so I can and we are going to support both”.

Gignac, the Formula 1 fan

The view of the Tigres striker at the Mexican Grand Prix surprised the curious in the Paddock area, however, Gignac remembers that his love for motor sports was born when he was eight years old and by chance, he had to see the tragic accident of Ayrton Senna, which occurred on May 1, 1994 at his uncle’s house.

“My uncle, my mother’s brother, was a big fan of Ayrton Senna, and that Sunday we were eating at his house when the accident happened, so I had to experience it in some way firsthand. We were very sad about what had happened, and from then on we followed F1 year after year.

Like millions of Formula 1 fans, Gignac reconnected and increased his passion for motorsport, thanks to “Drive To Survive”

“For all these years, I followed Formula 1, but for a long time it was predictable, however, when I completely reconnected, it was with Drive To Survive, because you can see what is behind the driver, the performance team, the constructor, of the whole team and that made me fall in love with Formula 1”.
