A year after the devastating forest fire in Hirschwang an der Rax, around 400 Florianis were awarded medals in Tulln.
Exactly one year ago, the forest fire in Hirschwang an der Rax in the Neunkirchen district required around 9,000 emergency services for almost two weeks. 400 blue and yellow firefighters have now been honored with medals from the state of Lower Austria for their disaster operations. “It was unbelievable how well every move was right,” emphasized Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner. “Everyone did a great job together,” agrees their state fire brigade commander Dietmar Fahrafellner. “Areas stabilized” It is also gratifying that initial successes can already be seen in the reforestation of the area. “The area was particularly at risk of erosion. We were able to stabilize these areas,” explains Andreas Januskovecz, Vienna’s forest director. Central help comes from the air. The City of Vienna, owner of thousands of hectares of spring protection forest in the area, has purchased a drone equipped with the latest technology. This actively searches for heat sources such as illegal campfires. As a result, such can not only be deleted early, but also the detonators can be researched.
