Working on a cruise ship is a unique job: always in different countries and away from home for a few weeks. A lot of people get curious and ask themselves: what is life like for the crew members on board?
Even a cruise ship has its secret corners that normal passengers cannot access. The US cruise line Royal Caribbean offers its passengers the opportunity to look behind the scenes during a two-hour tour, as a company fan blog writes. But you don’t get to see everything.
Cruise: Staff provide insight into life on board
In the age of social media, however, a lot is possible: several crew members run their own YouTube or TikTok channels and take their followers to corners they don’t normally see.
Bryan James works on the “Wonder of Seas”, the largest cruise ship in the world, as a singer and guitarist. He has 700,000 followers on TikTok. And there are some videos that give you an insight that otherwise only the staff gets. For example, there is a secret meeting place for the staff in the ship’s funnel.
In addition, employees of the “Wonder of Seas” can buy items such as snacks, hygiene products and the like in their own shop. This is only accessible to the crew. This store was extremely helpful, according to James, when crew members were not allowed to leave the ship during the pandemic. The prices in the shop are not “that bad”, as James reports. In front of the shop there is a dining room and lounge for crew members.
There are also extra restaurants for the crew members with, for example, a crepe station, live cooking station and salad bar. Much of the food available to crew members is also available to guests. However, there is a difference in the cabins: the rooms for the staff are not quite as luxurious as those for the guests. But the crew members have access to self-service washing machines, as the blog post states.
