On the threshold of the 55th anniversary of operations of volkswagen In Mexico, the German firm announced today an investment package that initially contemplates 763.5 million dollars destined for the development of projects and transformation of the facilities of this factory for the transition towards the manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles; beginning with the laying of the first stone for the construction of a new painting warehouse within the facilities of said complex

In an exclusive interview with Holger Nestlerpresident and CEO of VW from Mexico Y Paul Say Yespresident and CEO of Volkswagen Group of Americaand CEO of Volkswagen North America Region, reported that the painting warehouse will be ready in a year, and will start operations in 2024.


The new painting warehouse will have 100% electric bodywork baking processes and incinerators, using energy from renewable sources, of a wind farm, and which is the one that currently supplies this input to the vehicle and engine production processes of the assembly plant. This innovation represents a reduction of 29 tons of CO2 per year.

“Our industry is facing a dizzying transformation process. We have to invest in electric vehicles, without neglecting combustion vehicles, in order to face this transition that will take more or less years, depending on the markets. But that is unavoidable.” the manager said.


They highlighted that this investment is not only intended for the construction of the new paint shop which will be ready at the beginning of 2024 (it will be the first in the North American region where electric cars will be worked) but it is the first step to prepare this factory for the production of hybrid and electric vehicles.

“The investment we are making will be used not only for the production of a new electric car at the Puebla plant in 2025, but also includes the manufacture of a new midsize SUV with a low-emission gasoline internal combustion engine in 2024, which will be destined for Mexico, the United States and Canada”, Holger Nestler pointed out.

Paul Say Yes explained that the Volkswagen Group is currently in the midst of a very important transformation towards electric mobility in the North American region; and our country will play a leading role in the German firm’s electrification strategy in this region.

He stressed that 80% of the products sold by Volkswagen in the United States come from MexicoTherefore, the Puebla production complex is a key part of the brand’s electrification strategy, which is why they are preparing for the future and meeting the demand of this market for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Holger Nestler He explained that for the transformation for the electrification of the Puebla plant, the company has been preparing for two years, initially investing in technology, training and the placement of electric chargers, and now with the new painting warehouse.

He pointed out that the electric SUV ID.4 is going to be produced by the factory of Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States as part of the company’s electrification project for the region.


For his part, the governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa Huertasaid: “This investment represents a vote of confidence from one of the largest car manufacturers in the world”who defined Volkswagen as “a development engine” for the entity.

In her speech, the Secretary of Economy, Olivia Solomon He recalled that, in Puebla, the automotive sector represents more than 43 percent of the state GDP, generates more than 65,000 jobs through 362 economic units, and adds around 1,182 million dollars of investments in vehicle manufacturing during the administration.
