An official from South Korea’s National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) stole the organization’s funds and fled the country with some 4 billion won (over $2.8 million) in cash. cryptocurrencies, the local media reported this Thursday KBS News. The institution learned of the crime on September 22, but the details recently came to light.

The total amount stolen from the NHIS by the man surnamed Choi was 4.6 billion won (US$3.2 million), however, the police seized 680 million won from his bank accounts.

The alleged criminal managed to transfer the rest of the money to crypto exchange platforms or converted it into cash. Authorities have already contacted crypto platforms to freeze the stolen funds.

Meanwhile, the suspect is believed to have fled to the Philippines, although there is no exact information on his whereabouts. For its part, the country’s Foreign Ministry ordered the cancellation of Choi’s passport on October 31.
