The head of the branch of the Civil Initiative party in the Altai Territory, Yulia Aleshina, said that due to a bill banning LGBT “propaganda” she was forced to end her political career.

“I have never been engaged in such propaganda, but I have no idea how to continue to conduct public political activities, being an open transgender woman,” she wrote in her Telegram channel.

Aleshina said that she had previously experienced pressure due to being transgender. For example, she was not allowed to attend sessions of the regional parliament and was denied registration as a candidate for deputy of the Barnaul City Duma. After the adoption of the new law, Alyoshina believes, opposition will become even stronger.

“Going into politics, I planned to fight and fought for the rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of their nationality, orientation, and even political views. But I guess I was a little ahead of my time,” she wrote.
