Pablo Mari was doing his shopping on Thursday when a 46-year-old man pulled out a knife and started stabbing him around. One store employee did not survive the attack, 5 others were injured.

One of the injured was footballer Pablo Mari, who is loaned by Arsenal to Italian first division team Monza. There was reassuring news about Mari last night, although the Spaniard will still need surgery.

“He is not in life-threatening condition and we expect him to recover quickly. His injuries are not serious, but he will need surgery on his back,” said Monza CEO Adriano Galliani.

“I visited Pablo in the hospital and he is a fighter. He told me he was lucky. Pablo’s wife was also there, their child was in the shopping cart. He was hit in the back, then the perpetrator stabbed someone his neck. Pablo saw someone else die before his very eyes.”

“Our thoughts now go out to the fatal victim and to the other people involved and their families,” Monza said.

The perpetrator was eventually overpowered by Massimo Tarantino, former Napoli and Inter footballer. “But don’t make me a hero,” Tarantino put his intervention into perspective.

The perpetrator of the stabbing has been arrested. His motive is currently unknown, but according to the Italian police, the man had psychological problems.
