He died at his home in Desoto County, Mississippi, south of Memphis with his wife Judith at his side.

His publicist Zach Farnum said: “Lewis, perhaps the last great true icon of the birth of rock and roll, whose union of blues, gospel, country, honky-tonk and raw, forceful stage performances so threatened a young Elvis Presley it brought him to tears, has died.“.

He was there at the beginning, with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and the rest, and watched them vanish one by one until only he was left to witness.“.

Throughout his career, his music became successful on the pop, country, and R&B charts as well.

He also became known for his famous ‘antics’ on stage, such as playing keyboards standing up when no one else was, and even setting fire (literally) to the piano from time to time.
