You are currently viewing "It is an example of ‘I want, I can and I command’": PSD accuses PS of instituting a "near parliamentary dictatorship" it’s from "to hide" Coast

The PSD today accused the PS of establishing a “quasi-parliamentary dictatorship” and of wanting to “hide, protect” the prime minister from giving explanations about the energy interconnection agreement.

On Tuesday, at a conference of leaders, the PS opposed the holding of an urgent debate, already this week, on the topic, proposed by the Social Democrats who wanted António Costa to be present in the plenary, invoking the suspension of these sessions. during the current budget period.

In contrast, the Socialists announced the request for an extraordinary parliamentary hearing by the Minister of the Environment during the period of discussion in the specialty of the State Budget for 2023, already authorized by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, on energy interconnections.

Today, in declarations to journalists in parliament, deputy Duarte Pacheco returned to the subject to consider it “paradoxical” that it is accepted to hold a commission – which is also not usually held during the budget period -, but not a plenary session.

“It is paradoxical that the PS, in order to protect, hide the Prime Minister, brutally refuses, in the socialist way, I want and I command, the plenary meeting and is available for the meeting in commission with the Minister of the Environment”, pointed.

Duarte Pacheco assured that the PSD will not oppose this meeting in committee – which has not yet been scheduled – because he wants to clarify “the Portuguese that this is a bad agreement”, but defended that António Costa should do it , since it was he who negotiated the principle of agreement with Spain and France.

“It’s an example of ‘I want, I can and I command’. This house has rules, but there are also ways of acting and the PS’s way of acting is unfortunately already passing the bar of normal behavior in a democracy, becoming almost a parliamentary dictatorship, which is neither acceptable nor understandable”, he accused.

Asked about the form of urgent debates – which also do not require the presence of the prime minister in plenary, only that of the Government -, Duarte Pacheco insisted that “it would be more transparent whether the prime minister was available or not”.

“In a commission, then the government is never represented by the prime minister”, he justified.

The PSD had requested that the urgent debate take place on Thursday, at the end of the discussion on the Budget in general, accepting that it could take place on Friday, at 15:00, a proposal that emerged at the meeting of the leaders’ conference.

According to the summary of this body, released today, “the indispensable consensus was not obtained, altering the schedule previously agreed in a conference of leaders, to schedule that debate, in opposition to the parliamentary group of the PS”.

“In addition to the PSD GP, the remaining GPs agreed to hold the debate, provided that it was held in its own plenary session, to take place on Friday, the 28th”, the text also states.

The Social Democrats have harshly criticized the principle of agreement reached between Portugal, Spain and France to move forward with a “green energy corridor”, by sea, between Barcelona and Marseille (BarMar) to the detriment of the previous agreement (MidCat), with the social democrats to consider that the understanding “is bad” and “harms the national interest”.

For his part, the prime minister, António Costa, was perplexed by the PSD’s criticism of the principle of the agreement on European energy interconnections and accused the social-democratic leader Paulo Rangel – who spoke on behalf of the party during the end of week on the subject – of noticing anything on the subject.

The timetable, sources of funding and costs related to the implementation of the green corridor will be discussed in December in Alicante, Spain.
