Information and social networks go hand in hand. We already knew this with Twitter and Facebook, where many Internet users get information. And now, TikTok is entering the dance thanks to young adults. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center in the United States, the share of American adults who follow the news regularly on TikTok has increased by 10% this year; against growth of just 3% in 2020.

Beyond their primary role, social networks are transforming into media and the Chinese application is no exception. By surveying more than 12,000 Americans aged 18 to 29 this summer, we find that 26% of young Internet users obtain information there regularly, compared to 18% in 2021 and 9% in 2020. Among 30-49 year olds, this does not represents more than 10% of the population, and the figure drops to 4% when studying the 50-64 age group.

TikTok users are not necessarily those who follow the news assiduously. But, the popularity of the social network with people under thirty means that information is progressing mechanically. Finally, a third of Americans say they receive information on the platform from time to time, compared to 22% in 2020.

After all, information is content that is consumed just as easily as anything else. The key to success on this social network being originality, the media present have only to adopt their news in a more or less new format. No longer limited to entertainment, TikTok is diversifying and it would be a shame to miss it, because that’s where the audience is today.
