Almost every week there is new bad news for many people throughout Germany. This time it hits a product at Rewe, Lidl and Co that is more expensive than ever before.
Rewe, Lidl and Co.: Bitter news for customers
To be more precise, it is bread. According to the “Lebensmittelzeitung”, the price in the EU has risen by 18 percent in the last twelve months. This makes bread more expensive than ever before.
As with many other price increases, the main reason for this is the war between Russia and Ukraine. The two countries are major exporters of cereals, wheat, corn, oilseeds, sunflowers and fertilizers.
Rewe, Lidl and Co.: Price is below the EU average
Customers who go shopping at Rewe, Lidl and Co. must have noticed that bread prices have risen sharply. At 17.5 percent, the price of bread in Germany is currently just below the EU average.

Bakeries are also suffering. For many bakers, the higher prices are currently not enough to cover their costs. Because the ovens in most bakeries run on gas, which many can hardly afford given the high gas prices. The industry in Germany sounds the alarm. Most recently, the Association of Delivery and Branch Bakers pointed out that even the economically healthy bakeries are currently fighting for their existence.
