Borussia Dortmund is known for being a good port of call for top European talent to gain a foothold in the top leagues. Most of the time, they move on after a few years to then go on a title hunt with a top club. However, not all of them were as successful as, for example, Erling Haaland or Robert Lewandowski.
One of the players whose farewell certainly didn’t go as planned is Christian Pulisic. If an English football legend has his way, the American should follow Timo Werner’s example and possibly return to his former club. This would be Borussia Dortmund.
Carragher advises Pulisic to do it like Werner
In the summer of 2019, Christian Pulisic moved from Borussia Dortmund to Chelsea. The “Blues” are said to have paid 50 million euros to the Bundesliga club at the time. However, the American was never able to really gain a foothold in England. Although Pulisic’s situation improved a little under Graham Potter, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes in an interview with “CBS Sports” that the American should leave London.
As an example of the successful move away from Chelsea, Carragher cites Pulisic’s ex-teammate Timo Werner. The German striker returned to RB Leipzig this summer after a two-year adventure with the London club and has already scored eight goals and four assists in 14 games there. The former central defender advises the American to do the same as Werner and go to a “smaller club”. Carragher even names Dortmund as a possible station for Pulisic, which according to him would correspond to his level.
Pulisic had a successful time in Dortmund
Christian Pulisic had a successful time at BVB. In 127 games for Dortmund, the American scored 19 goals and 26 assists. Due to the fact that the 24-year-old spent more than four years with the Bundesliga club, he quickly became a small fan favorite at the club from the Ruhr area.
However, a return to his former club is unlikely. In addition to Jamie-Bynoe Gittens, Dortmund still need another winger in their squad, but it is almost impossible that BVB will spend more than 40 million euros (market value 42 million euros according to “Transfermarkt”) for a return from Pulisic . If the London club doesn’t make huge concessions to the Dortmunders, if they’re interested, then Pulisic won’t return to BVB.
