Arturo Zaldivarminister president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), recognized that in Mexico the federal judges have to earn their independence from society.
“In the face of a much more demanding society, much more informed, that demands justice because it is fed up with injustices, a society that criticizes our work every day and before which we have to earn our legitimacy every day, a polarized society that tries to use the judiciary at their convenience, depending on whether they like and what a judge ruled on a certain matter suits them.”
Participating in the ceremony of the ‘Activities Report of the Federal Judicial Training School 2022’, Minister Arturo Zaldívar said that every day federal judges defend their independence with their sentences and resolutions. He expressed that it is there where they defend themselves and not in a public square.
“Our job is to defend the Constitution and human rights against institutionalized powers, but also against de facto powers. We are not the opposition nor are we the government, we are the balancing power and let everyone understand it because that will be the work we will continue to do, with loyalty to the Constitution, with loyalty towards human rights and with loyalty towards our country”.
He affirmed that he is committed to making the judiciary a instrument so that the economic sector have clear rules of jurisdiction, so that those who invest in this country and risk their capital know that there are federal judges who are willing to ensure that the rules of the game do not change or are modified.
He also said that there is an obligation to impart justice that privilege the poorest of this country and so that the entire judiciary continues to judge with a gender perspective, for which he welcomed the fact that the Tamaulipas Congress reformed its Civil Code to allow marriage equality.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) was a glorious day, finally in Mexico the whole country is covered with a huge rainbow, finally love is love and all rights are for all people. Never again will the State prohibit someone with whom you want to live your life; this is an immeasurable advance that was made with the redoubled blow of the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation”.
The presiding minister of the highest court in the country said that it should also be strengthen justice for people with disabilitiesindigenous, victims of femicide, rape, gender violence, the disappeared and immigrants.
