Of course, with a defeat like the national team’s 2-0 defeat in France, it’s a side issue at best.
But of course it was noticeable that Xaver Schlager played with the number 4 for the first time in his 30th international match – as a kind of successor to Martin Hinteregger.
“It was free after ‘Hinti’ resigned. I always wanted the 4, but never thought I’d get it because I thought ‘Hinti’ would play even longer. But now it’s unexpectedly faster become free,” explains Schlager.
In recent years, the Leipzig legionnaire has played for Austria with the number 23 shirt.
Hinteregger was already absent from the course in June, when Marco Friedl was still wearing the 4.
Now Schlager assumes that he has secured the new number: “I hope that nobody will take it away from me.”
