President Gabriel Boric responded to criticism of the Minister of Defense, Maya Fernández, for her actions after the leak of thousands of documents from the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces became known, forcing her to return earlier than expected to Chile from New York.

Precisely from that North American city, the head of state valued Fernández’s work, while highlighting General Guillermo Paiva’s resignation from this instance of military coordination.

“I am certain that when Minister Fernández received an alert of a vulnerability, not of a hack, of a vulnerability -since the hack had already occurred, Minister Tohá reported that-, she took all the measures that were its scope and allocated the necessary resources to strengthen the security systems,” the President specified.

However, he stressed that “the hacking had already taken place, therefore, it seems correct to me that General Paiva has assumed his responsibility. It was a resignation that he put on the table.”

Regarding possible responsibilities of other EMCO officials, the president commented that “there is an ongoing investigation. What I can tell you is that we are working on this as a State together with all the commanders in chief and that is why the Minister of Defense traveled back to Chile in advance.”
