No medal for Belgian promises, Astana rider Fedorov takes world title

In contrast to the junior road race, the U23 World Championships remained closed for a long time. Fabio Van den Bossche slipped along with five others in the second of ten laps and put the other Belgians in the seat.

With three laps from the end, the race finally broke open. Van Den Bossche remained in the front with the German Wilksch and the Frenchman Le Berre. The peloton got smaller round after round, without any real loss of one of the top riders.

Van den Bossche’s story was told on the penultimate climb of Mount Pleasant. The other Belgians took over immediately, Segaert went with the Kazak Fedorov and the Czech Vacek in search of Le Berre, the only survivor of the early break.

On the final lap, Segaert had to break up all the way uphill, who had to let go of Fedorov and Vacek, two fully-fledged professionals, just before the top of the last climb. The Belgians, who had been driving the perfect course until then, were suddenly reliant on chasing.

Fedorov and Vacek dived into the final kilometer together, after which the Astana rider, fresh from the Vuelta, easily controlled the sprint. Jenno Berckmoes eventually became the first Belgian in 10th place.
