North Macedonia striker Goran Pandev announced the end of his career on Thursday.

With the words “A beautiful chapter comes to an end”, the 39-year-old said goodbye to the active football business via Instagram. Most recently, Pandev was under contract with Parma Calcio, where he has not played since April 2022.

The striker from the Balkans has had great successes. North Macedonia’s five-time player of the year won the 2010 UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan.

Legend in North Macedonia

One of his greatest achievements, despite the treble season with Inter 2010, is reaching the 2020 Pan-European Championship with his home country. Pandev scored the gold goal in the play-off against Georgia and caused ecstasy in North Macedonia.

Austria is also in the history books of the nation from Southeast Europe, because the North Macedonians celebrated their European Championship debut in Group C against the Austrian national team.

Austria won the game in Bucharest 3-1. The interim 1-1 equalizer was provided by none other than Goran Pandev himself, who also scored North Macedonia’s first goal in a major tournament.

However, North Macedonia were denied a point in the remaining games against Ukraine and the Netherlands. It was North Macedonia’s first and so far only participation in a major event.

After the European Championship, Pandev announced the end of his national team career. He is both the record player with 122 games and the record goalscorer in his home country with 38 goals.

Now the time has come for the 39-year-old to finally hang up his football boots.
