"This was not an achievement after which you sit back and say: this will be fine at the World Cup"

Job done or could it be a bit more? Peter Vandenbempt is not convinced after the 2-1 victory of the Red Devils against Wales. “This seemed a bit too much like the matches that the Belgians have played in recent months: this was not reassuring.”

Was this comforting? No, not exactly.

This was not an achievement after which you sit back and say: this will all be fine at the World Cup.

There were 10 very mediocre minutes, the Belgians started inexplicably weak. Then they played well until the break with Kevin De Bruyne as director.

He was outstanding, but the Welshmen rolled out the red carpet and defended very weakly.

The Belgians combined well and it could have been 3-0 or 4-0. Then you think: they add a few more goals in the second half, but it has completely stopped.

There was still control after the umpteenth goal, but it was hardly possible to force opportunities. That’s not exactly reassuring.

There was nothing left of the good combination game and you had a few pressing phases in your own penalty area with yet another goal against.

Then this seems a bit too much like the matches that the Belgians have played in recent months.

There was still control, but it was hardly possible to force chances. That’s not exactly reassuring.

The Devils will play against the Netherlands on Sunday. Group profit is still mathematically possible, but it seems to me that it will fly.

Although Belgium still has to reassure the nation on Sunday not to board the plane to Qatar in a few months with a bad feeling.

“As far as the addition of the selection is concerned, we have learned nothing”

There was of course Kevin De Bruyne, but Michy Batshuayi also did quite well.

On the flanks you can see that Thomas Meunier and Yannick Carrasco are basic players at their club and are in better shape, but 10 of the 11 players in the basic squad are already certain of their World Cup selection.

We were looking forward to Zeno Debast’s debut: sober, not too many risks, but trumped in the air when that goal was conceded.

But the invaders brought no real added value. With regard to the addition of the selection – which already consists of about 20 players – we have learned nothing tonight.
