Students protest in Chile after the rejection of the new Constitution

The Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, defended this Thursday the war in ukraine and accused his neighbor of committing atrocities. When addressing a meeting of the UN Security Councilthe foreign minister accused kyiv of creating threats against Russian security and “blatantly trampling on” the rights of Russians and Russian-speakers in the country.

“I can assure you that we will never accept this,” said Lavrov, who came to the council chamber to speak and then left. “Everything I have said today simply confirms that the decision to carry out the special military operation was inevitable,” he said.

He also said that the countries supplying Ukraine with weapons and training its soldiers were parties to the conflict, adding that “the collective West’s intentional fomenting of this conflict remained unpunished.” Thousands of people have been killed and Ukrainian cities reduced to rubble since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in the biggest assault on a European state since World War II.

For his part, the United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, promised that Washington would continue to support Ukraine to defend itself. “The very international order that we have gathered here to defend is being shattered before our eyes. We cannot allow President Putin to get away with it,” Blinken told the council, Reuters replied.

Thursday’s Security Council meeting took place during the annual gathering of world leaders for the UN General Assembly. The council has been unable to take any meaningful action on Ukraine because Russia is a permanent member with veto power along with USA, France, United Kingdom Y China.
