“I’m here to prepare for my last doubles match. I’m nervous because I haven’t played for a long time and I hope to be competitive. The rehabilitation hasn’t been easy, a lot of ups and downs, at least I’ve enjoyed being able to be at home with my family.” , said Federer in recent days.
On the decision to retire, Federer confirmed that it is “a process that began at the beginning of the summer”: “We tried to increase the intensity of training and we saw that we could not. It is normal in rehabilitation to increase a little and see that you have to go back, but I had a scan and I saw that I was not as I expected to be. I was not willing to risk everything. I did not want to end my career with so many operations. Tennis is a very tough sport, with five-set matches, tournaments every week on different continents, so physically you have to be in good condition,” he said.
“You are sad when you realize that it is the end. But I could forget a bit when I went on vacation. At Wimbledon – when he attended the centenary of Center Court – I thought that maybe there would be an opportunity to return next year, but during I didn’t talk much about it on vacation,” he added.
London, scene of goodbye
Federer arrived in London on Monday, before holding a press conference in which he detailed the reasons for his retirement, at 41 years old and after having barely been able to play 20 games in more than two and a half years. Nadal, for his part, lands this Thursday in London, after exercising at his academy in Manacor.
The Balearic, who is awaiting the birth of his first child, has not competed since he fell in the round of 16 last US Open.
