Nadia Calviño shows her fangs: "You seek only to appear on TV", "I have your list of appointments"...

The expectation of the Government Control session in the Congress of Deputies this Wednesday was minimal. The absence of the president Pedro Sanchez, due to his participation in the UN Assembly, he anticipated a decaffeinated plenary session. But, there it was Nadia Calvino to exercise its most political role.

The person in charge of Economic Affairs, identified with the most technical profile of the Government, has shown her fangs in her responses to the opposition, blurting out a string of phrases such as “You are only looking to appear on television”, “I have here your list of highly questionable appointments” or “don’t talk to me about La Liga”.

Calviño has responded vehemently to criticism from the center and right-wing caucus. The first to check it out was Jaime de Olanospokesperson for the Popular Party, who has questioned the appointment to the CNMV of Mariano Bacigalupohusband of the vice president Theresa Rivera.

“Do you consider that in your case there are no family interests?”, raised the popular leader. To which Calviño warned: “I have here a list of appointments [sujetando con dos dedos unos papeles y mostrándolos a la oposición] highly questionable members of the Popular Party, but I’m not going to put myself at their level, I’m not going to play their game”.

What piece of paper has he got? having to do with a question that should be embarrassing”, continued Calviño. Later, the vice president defended her colleague’s spouse: “He has proven his worth”.

The popular spokesman returned asserting that the Government “asphyxiates the middle and low incomes, plugs their friends in, dismisses the only public servants, pardons the corrupt, ministers fight and insults the alternative.”

And to this, visibly angry, Calviño has counterattacked: “His intervention qualifies itself. It is controversy and noise. Why has Moreno Bonilla gotten into a war with Ayuso to benefit large fortunes? The PP is increasingly see more duster, they are not right even once to benefit the citizens”.

Then it’s time to Ivan Espinosa de los MonterosVox spokesperson: “They ask me to thank the Minister of Economy and Pedro for how well Spain is doing, for how cheap the shopping basket is. When are you going to understand that your triumphant message has nothing to do with do with the daily reality of the Spaniards?

“Don’t talk about football”

With an even more serious face, the head of Economy has disavowed this comment: “The truth that I don’t understand why you make jokes and jokes about such a serious topic like the difficulties that Spaniards have to make ends meet”.

And Espinosa, surprised by Calviño’s performance, continued: “In addition to sinking the Spaniards, he comes here with a bad temper and throws fights”. Then, he changed thirds and made a football simile with Levante’s drop to second to explain that, although Spain grows, he is still in the tail end.

“Levante was penultimate [después de sumar muchos puntos en el tramo final del campeonato], but it was worth nothing. He started from a very small base. In the same way, we should probably also change the coach in this League, because you have lowered us to the Second Division”. And Calviño, stunned, has charged against his opponent: “We are not here to talk about the Football League”.

Finally, he has accused Ines Arrimadasto register a question and an interpellation in the House only because “he wants to be on television”. All this when the Citizens spokeswoman asked him: “What measures is the Government going to take to help families affected by the rise in mortgages?”

Arrimadas had started his speech with the example of a family that, due to the rise in interest rates, has to pay practically double for its mortgage. The vice president did not like the question or the example, despite the fact that Arrimadas’s tone had not been hurtful. After her, and undaunted by the opposition’s reproaches, she once again defended the government’s actions, but leaving aside the moderate and technical style that usually characterizes her.
