Guide: The quarrels around "Don't worry darling"

+ The star drops out – or gets fired.

Oliva Wilde is praised by the critics for her debut film “Booksmart” and when it is clear that the next project will be “Don’t worry darling”, a thriller in a 50s environment, with Florence Pugh and Shia LaBeouf in the lead roles, there is great interest. But on September 11, 2020 comes the news that pop star Harry Styles is replacing LaBeouf, filming clashes with another job. Later, Olivia Wilde says she actually fired her star – because of his “confrontational energy”. This happens in the same vein that LaBeouf is accused of assaulting his former girlfriend, the artist FKA Twigs.

+ Oliva Wilde and Harry Styles get together – the ex-husband takes revenge.

The director and her star will be a couple revealed by the press in January 2021. Newly divorced Wilde has left her husband, actor Jason Sudeikis, almost a year earlier. He retaliates by having the authorities very publicly deliver documents to her requesting custody of their children, while she is on stage at a Las Vegas film festival this April, making big headlines.

Harry Styles and Florence Pugh in a scene from “Don’t worry darling”. The female actor feels that there has been too much focus on the sex scenes in the film.

+ Too much sex in the trailer?

Florence Pugh is disappointed that two sex scenes with her and Harry Styles are included in the trailers that have been released. It is drawing focus from other and more important themes in the plot, she thinks. “The film is bigger and better than that,” says the Brit in a newspaper interview in August. Olivia Wilde responds by paying tribute to Florence Pugh in another article.

+ Shia LaBeouf gives again.

Just a month before the premiere, Shia LaBeouf strikes back. He was not fired from the film because of his behavior. In fact, there wasn’t enough time for rehearsals, he tells industry magazine Variety. He also shares an email from Olivia Wilde and a video clip of her saying she is devastated that he has dropped out. She begs and pleads for him to come back, saying, “This could be a wake-up call for Miss Flo,” which everyone interprets as a reference to Florence Pugh.

+ United front in Venice – but no questions.

As the rumor mill begins to reach hurricane force, “Don’t worry darling” will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 5. Florence Pugh comes to the red carpet, but does not give interviews. When journalists on site try to ask questions about the controversy, Olive Wilde says she “doesn’t want to feed the internet. I don’t want to contribute to it, it gets enough energy as it is”. After that, no more questions on the topic are allowed.

+ The suspected spit slip.

During the film premiere in Venice, someone thinks they see Harry Styles spitting at his co-star Chris Pine in the movie theater and the internet explodes. However, Pine’s press person categorically denies that the star has been spat on: “Those who claim it are trying to create drama that simply does not exist,” he tells the celebrity magazine People.
