Vinicius Junior has achieved something historic. He has agreed to all the parliamentary groups in Congress in defense of him. The Brazilian Real Madrid footballer has been the main protagonist in recent days as he is the center of a great racist campaign that has been orchestrated by the Atlético de Madrid fans.
Given the terrible events that occurred before and during the celebration of El Derbi between Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid, Vinicius was subjected to insults and racist chants by a sector of the red and white fans present at the Civitas Metropolitano. A situation that also occurred in the run-up to the meeting.
Shouting “Vinicius, you’re a monkey”, an important group of madmen continued to shape an unfortunate show that has stained Spanish football and also the country’s society. The Brazilian player has had to face this tough campaign against him while he had to face one of the most complicated professional commitments of the entire season: his visit to the field of one of the eternal rivals.
To condemn this type of event, which in the case of the white team footballer has been one of the most serious cases of racism that has occurred in recent years in La Liga, Congress has decided to raise its voice. At the initiative of Íñigo Errejón, deputy and president of Mas País, all the parliamentary groups have signed an institutional declaration to repudiate the racist insults and chants that occurred due to the presence of Vinicius in the Madrid Derby.
The document, which has been made public, has been signed by all parties and comes to condemn what happened before, during and after El Derbi. It all started with some controversial statements by Koke Resurrection, player and captain of Atlético de Madrid, threatening Vinicius about the possibility that he would dance at the Metropolitan if he scored a goal.
Immediately afterwards, the player received racist criticism from the well-known soccer player agent Pedro Bravo in one of his usual television interventions. This fact generated great anger in Brazil and in a good list of players who wanted to come out in defense of Vinicius, especially his compatriots with Neymar at the helm.
With El Derbi already heated up, it was expected that there would be some incidents involving the Atlético de Madrid fans with Vinicius as a victim. So it was. Part of the red and white fans xenophobically insulted the Brazilian in the face of the passivity of the club, which has taken several days to report that he will try to punish those members and fans who can be identified as the authors of the chants.
Now, in defense of the player, the Congress of Deputies has issued this important letter to condemn everything that happened with Vinicius. The objective is to try to make society aware that these unfortunate events cannot be repeated as they have already been taking place with other great La Liga footballers.
The declaration of Congress
“Last Saturday there was an unfortunate racist incident in the vicinity of the Atlético de Madrid field when Atlético fans hurled xenophobic racist insults at the player Vinicius Junior because of the color of his skin. The agitation of hate, racism and xenophobia are not a strictly sporting issue because football also educates, and in this case it educates for the worse: from the football fields the insults go to the schoolyards. For this reason, this parliament cannot look the other way”.
“This episode is not an isolated case but a new example of a reality that has already been denounced many times: Marega, Kameni, Williams, Marcelo, Alves or Eto’o, among others, are some of the players who have suffered racist insults An even more bloody reality considering that only once has a match been stopped.”
“This shows that, indeed, it is possible to stop a match due to racist insults from the stands and that the only thing missing is greater awareness and, in addition to the sanctions that the Anti-Violence Commission can and should impose, greater forcefulness by institutions, clubs and players”.
“For all these reasons, the entire Congress of Deputies: expresses its absolute rejection of violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sports and in any other field. It is committed to the will to agree between the parliamentary groups to promote respect in the field of sport and the necessary measures to eradicate intolerance, racism, xenophobia and any form of violence”.
“It urges the organization of La Liga, UEFA, FIFA, the sports clubs and also the athletes involved, as well as the Higher Sports Council and all public administrations to continue committing themselves to the total eradication of Violence, the racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport”.
