The parliaments of self-proclaimed republics of Lugansk and of Donetskprovinces of Ukraine who are pro-Russian, on Monday approved motions for the holding of referendums on the accession of both to Russia. The Lugansk Public Chamber unanimously proposed to the leader of the region, Leonid Pasechnikthe immediate holding of a vote.
“The Public Chamber of the Lugansk People’s Republic appealed to the head of the LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, with the initiative to immediately hold a referendum on the territory of the republic on recognition as a constituent entity of the Russian Federation,” the agency said, reported Telam.
The Lugansk authorities hope that the population will vote in favor of joining Moscow, at a time when they fear a counteroffensive by the Ukrainian troops. The region has been under Russian control since July. For its part, the Donetsk Civic Chamber also unanimously requested the «president» of the «republic», Denis Pushilinthe urgent call for a referendum.
“We want the Russian border to be between us and Ukraine, we want to be part of the Great Motherland, Russia, again; the people of Donbass deserve it”, explains the motion approved and signed by the speaker of the parliament, alexei kofman. The Donbass region is made up of Donetsk and Lugansk.
In relation to all of the above, I request the head of the republic, Denis Pushilin, and the Donetsk People’s Council to “adopt the historic and correct decision to immediately hold a referendum,” he said. Donetsk and Lugansk declared themselves independent in 2014 after two separate referendums, after which it began a military intervention in Ukraine at the end of February.
