Starting September 20, all diplomatic missions and consulates of Russia abroad resumed accepting applications for new generation passports valid for 10 years.

“The technical difficulties that led to the temporary suspension of the issuance of such passports have been overcome. Additional measures have been taken to ensure stable work on the issuance and issuance of passports with electronic media to citizens of the Russian Federation living abroad,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced a temporary suspension of the issuance of biometric passports on August 26. The department explained that this measure is connected with the need to reformat the electronic media. Ordinary passports for a period of five years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued to issue in the same mode.

In June, the Russian government froze the project for issuing digital internal Russian passports. One of the reasons for this was called the shortage of chips, which Russia faced against the backdrop of sanctions due to the war in Ukraine.
