Pelosi’s trip to Yerevan seems to have come in handy for the Western media to criticize Russia’s role in the South Caucasus. Nevertheless, the US sees Azerbaijan as a NATO candidate, since Washington could endanger the North-South Corridor and the New Silk Road.

After recent fierce fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Armenia and blamed Azerbaijan for the escalation. Such unequivocal blame in the conflict goes well beyond what the US State Department has publicly stated so far. During a visit to Yerevan, the leading politician spoke of “illegal and deadly attacks by Azerbaijan on Armenian territory”. The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, also said on Sunday that the violence had ended “thanks to US mediation”.

Armenia is now demanding western sanctions against Azerbaijan to halt the country’s expansionist drive. The question now is whether the West is ready to take this step. So far, the German government and the EU have remained silent on the current military conflict between Baku and Yerevan. In their efforts to become independent of Russian gas, the EU states would rather do business with Azerbaijan.

Pelosi’s trip to Yerevan appears to have come in handy for the Western media to criticize Russia’s role in the South Caucasus. “So far, Russia has been considered Armenia’s protecting power. But a few days after the attack by Azerbaijan, Nancy Pelosi demonstrated US support for Yerevan with unusual clarity,” it said in the mirror. “Armenia has for years chosen to be a key strategic ally of the Kremlin, but many are now increasingly questioning whether Moscow can act as the guarantor of the nation’s security against the superior firepower of neighboring Azerbaijan,” commented political.

In the shadow of the Ukraine conflict: will the next war flare up?

Despite the friendly gesture in Yerevan, the US sees Azerbaijan as a NATO candidate, since Washington could endanger China’s north-south corridor (Iran and Russia) and the New Silk Road if Azerbaijan joined NATO. The US benefited from a possible Turkish-Muslim corridor across Eurasia, which would shatter the close partnership between Russia and China. Turkey dreams of a Turkish Corridor to connect the Nakhchivan enclave to Azerbaijan via Armenia, creating a direct connection across the Caspian Sea eastbound to the “Turkic States” in Central Asia.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan has forged a close partnership with NATO member Turkey and has received large shipments of advanced weapons from Ankara that have given it a significant advantage over its neighbor. At the same time, the United States is trying to put even more pressure on Turkey, which has so far not supported the Western sanctions against the Kremlin, by rapprochement with Armenia. Washington is very calculated playing with the Armenia card to advance its geopolitical interests. As for “Armenia’s security,” that is secondary to the White House.
